Built Up Together in the Body of Christ

A sister in your fellowship has begun staying home from church. Her business is thriving, her family seems settled, yet Sunday after Sunday her seat remains empty. When you ask her quietly, she says, ‘I am fine spiritually. I pray at home. Church is not necessary.’ But within months, her marriage grows cold, her prayer life dries up, and she finds herself isolated and vulnerable to temptation. This is the silent danger of forsaking Christian fellowship.

The writer of Hebrews understood what many Nigerian believers forget: we are not meant to walk alone. He commands us to “consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.” The word “provoke” here means to stir up, to awaken, to kindle. In isolation, our spiritual fire dims. But in fellowship, believers kindle one another’s passion for Jesus. When you sit with brothers and sisters in worship, when you hear their testimonies, when you pray together, something supernatural happens—the Holy Ghost fans your flame.

Notice the urgency in verse 25: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is.” Even in the early church, some grew careless about gathering. Perhaps they felt self-sufficient. Perhaps they were embarrassed or distracted. But Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 that we are all members of one body, and “by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.” You cannot fully function as a member separated from the body.

Fellowship is not merely social—it is spiritual warfare. When you gather with believers, you are strengthened for the battles ahead. In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, Solomon reminds us: “Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” Your church community is God’s provision for your survival and growth.

Moreover, we see in 1 John 1:7 that walking in the light together—literally, in fellowship—keeps us cleansed: “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Sin loves isolation. Temptation thrives in darkness and loneliness. But gathered in fellowship, under the light of God’s Word, we are protected and purified.

Today, commit to your local church body with intention. Do not let busyness, pride, or spiritual complacency steal your seat in the assembly. You need the prayers of others. Others need your gifts. The day of Christ’s return is approaching—verse 25 reminds us—and we must stir one another up while there is still time.

Lord, bind my heart to Your people and guard me from the deceit of isolation.
