“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:57 (KJV)
You wake this Thursday morning with a weight in your chest. The letter arrived yesterday—your business partner has abandoned the venture, leaving debts unpaid. Your mind races through worst-case scenarios: lost income, creditors calling, shame before your family and church. The fear is real, and it threatens to crush your hope before the day truly begins.
But Paul’s declaration in 1 Corinthians 15:57 arrives like dawn breaking through darkness: “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” This is not hollow encouragement. This is resurrection power speaking into your present crisis.
The apostle Paul had just finished unpacking the entire logic of Christian hope in the preceding verses. He reminded us that Christ rose from the dead—the first fruits of those who believed in Him. That resurrection was not merely a historical event two thousand years ago. It was the definitive proof that death, the ultimate enemy, has been conquered. When Jesus rose, He did not rise as a ghost or a vision. He rose in bodily victory, having disarmed all the powers of darkness.
Notice the word “gives”—present tense. Not “gave” in the past. Christ gives us the victory. Right now. Today. In this very moment when fear whispers that you are finished.
Romans 6:9 strengthens this truth: “Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.” If death has no dominion over Christ, and you are in Christ through faith, then death—and all its shadows, including financial ruin, shame, and despair—has no final dominion over you either. The resurrection broke death’s power permanently.
This does not mean your business debt disappears or that creditors will vanish. It means something far deeper: your identity is no longer determined by your circumstances. Your worth is not calculated by your bank account. Your future is not written by yesterday’s failure. You are resurrection-people, joined to the One who rose from death itself.
Peter echoed this reality: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3). Your hope is not in the restoration of your business—it rests in the resurrection of your Saviour.
Today, as you face the practical work of calling creditors, seeking counsel, and rebuilding trust, you do so no longer as a defeated person. You do so as someone united to the risen Christ. The victory is already won. Your present struggle is real, but it is no longer final. You will walk through this valley, but the valley does not own you. Death and failure have been dethroned.
Lord, help me to live today not by my circumstances, but by the resurrection power of Christ Jesus.
