God’s Purpose for Our Nation
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”

Sister Chioma sat in her Lagos office, watching the news report yet another economic challenge facing our nation. Her heart grew heavy. She whispered to a colleague, “Will Nigeria ever know true peace and prosperity?” Her colleague smiled gently and said, “Our God is still on the throne.”
Many of us have asked this same question. We see the struggles in our land—corruption, division, poverty, and uncertainty. We wonder if Africa truly has a future in God’s plan. But the Psalmist reminds us of a profound truth: God has not abandoned nations. He blesses the nation whose God is the Lord.
Notice the condition in Psalm 33:12. It is not wealth, military strength, or political cunning that brings blessing. It is the acknowledgment of God as Lord. Nigeria and Africa will flourish not when we trust in our leaders alone, but when we, as a people, submit our nations to the sovereignty of God. The psalmist declares that a people chosen by God for His inheritance experience His favour and protection.
Consider the pattern throughout Scripture. When Israel walked in covenant with God, they prospered. When they turned away, they faced judgment. Yet even in judgment, God remembered His covenant. In Jeremiah 29:11, the Lord speaks to His captive people: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” This promise applies not only to individuals but to nations and peoples who call upon God.
Africa—our beloved continent—has a destiny in God’s hands. We are not forgotten. We are not forsaken. The same God who brought Israel through the wilderness can guide our nations through their seasons of testing. Proverbs 14:34 declares: “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Our nations need righteousness. This begins with believers like you and me, choosing to live holy lives, to pray without ceasing for our leaders, and to speak truth in love.
God’s plan for Africa includes revival. It includes healing. It includes prosperity rooted not in corruption but in justice and godliness. But this requires our partnership with Him through intercession, integrity, and obedience.
Today, your challenge is to refuse despair. Instead, join the growing army of African believers who pray for their nations. Intercede for your country’s leaders. Live with such visible righteousness that others see Christ in you. Teach the next generation that God’s Word is the foundation of national blessing, not political ideology or human wisdom.
The future of Nigeria and Africa is not determined by world powers or economic reports. It is determined by whether we, as God’s people, will turn our faces toward Him and seek His kingdom first.
Lord, give us faith to believe that Your purpose for Africa cannot be thwarted.
