“The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”
— Psalm 33:10-11 (KJV)
A pastor in Lagos sits in his office, heavy-hearted. The news speaks of economic strain, political uncertainty, and division across our beloved Nigeria. Young people ask him: Does God care about Africa? Does He have a plan for our continent when the future seems so unclear? This question echoes in churches from Kano to Port Harcourt.
David’s words in Psalm 33 are a balm to the weary soul. The psalmist declares that whilst men devise their schemes—whether in parliaments, boardrooms, or the streets—the counsel of the heathen is brought to nothing. The devices of earthly powers, no matter how elaborate, have no permanence. But God’s counsel stands forever. This is the assurance we must grasp: whilst leaders rise and fall, policies shift and crumble, God’s eternal purpose for Nigeria and Africa remains unmoved.
Consider this: Africa is not an afterthought in God’s redemptive story. The Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:27 was a man of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. Yet the Holy Ghost caught away Philip to speak the gospel to him. From the earliest days of the Church, Africa has been part of God’s unfolding plan. The believers in Egypt, Ethiopia, and North Africa shaped Christian history. Today, millions across our continent worship Jesus Christ. This is no accident—it is the counsel of the Lord.
When we look at Nigeria specifically, we must remember Proverbs 21:31: “The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.” We prepare our nation through education, integrity, and faithful work. We vote wisely. We build businesses. We serve our communities. But ultimate victory and flourishing belong to God alone. Our responsibility is obedience; His responsibility is the outcome.
The thoughts of God’s heart toward Africa are thoughts of peace, not evil (Jeremiah 29:11). He sees the millions who will yet come to know Christ across our continent. He sees nations transformed by the gospel. He sees leaders who will rise up with righteous hearts. These are His thoughts toward us, and they cannot be thwarted by corruption, conflict, or chaos.
Your challenge today: identify one area of national or community concern that troubles your heart. Rather than despair, take that concern to prayer. Write it down. Commit to intercede for it weekly. Share it with your prayer group. Remember that intercessory prayer is how believers align themselves with God’s eternal counsel. You are not powerless—you are a co-worker with the Almighty in prayer.
Lord, grant us faith to trust Your counsel even when earthly circumstances seem chaotic.
