Hope That Anchors the Soul

Sister Chioma sat in the hospital waiting room, her business permit application rejected for the third time. The government office had promised a decision in three months; it had been eight. Her savings were depleting. Her family’s faith was wavering. She had hoped so earnestly, planned so carefully—yet the door remained shut. In that moment, she felt the weight of a question many Nigerian believers know too well: *Can I trust a hope that keeps disappointing me?*

Paul writes to the Romans with an answer that pierces deeper than circumstances: “Hope maketh not ashamed.” This is not the vague optimism of the world, which crumbles when circumstances collapse. This is *Christian hope*—hope secured not in outcomes, but in the Person of Christ and the unchanging love of God.

The word “ashamed” in Scripture carries the sense of being put to shame, of being let down and exposed. Paul declares that this will *never* be the fate of the believer’s hope, because it is grounded in something external and eternal. Notice what anchors this hope: “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.” The Holy Spirit Himself witnesses to us the reality of God’s love. This is not mere feeling; it is the testimony of the Spirit working through the written Word and our renewed spirits.

When Chioma’s business application was denied, her hope in *that outcome* was disappointed. But her hope in God—in His character, His faithfulness, His love—remained unshaken. The Psalmist teaches us: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God” (Psalm 42:5). Notice the command: hope *in God*, not in circumstances.

Consider also Hebrews 6:19: “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast.” An anchor does not lift you above the storm; it keeps you from drifting away in it. When the disappointments come—and they will—the anchor of hope in God’s love holds you secure.

The Holy Ghost who dwells in you is not a timid spirit. He is the Spirit of boldness, of witness, of assurance. When you feel hope slipping, return to the truth: God’s love for you was demonstrated at Calvary. It does not depend on whether your application is approved, your business prospers, or your prayers are answered in your timeline. His love is *shed abroad*—it flows constantly, abundantly, without measure.

Chioma’s story did not end in that waiting room. Months later, through an unexpected connection, the door opened. But more importantly, her soul had learned that her worth and her future rested not on an office’s decision, but on the immovable foundation of God’s love.

Today, where have you placed your hope? Examine any disappointment you carry. Then deliberately, consciously, place it on the altar of God’s unchanging love, witnessed to you by His Spirit.
