Hope that anchors the weary soul

The letter came on a Tuesday. Your business application—the one you prayed over for months, the venture that was meant to sustain your family—had been rejected. Again. You sat in the cramped Lagos office, watching your dream scatter like harmattan dust. Around you, colleagues whispered about their own disappointments: the promotion that went to someone less qualified, the child who failed the entrance examination despite countless lessons, the medical report that brought unwelcome news. In Nigeria, hope often feels like a luxury the poor cannot afford.

Yet Paul writes with absolute certainty: “Hope maketh not ashamed.” The Greek word here is “elpis”—a confident expectation, not mere wishful thinking. Paul is not promising that everything will work out as you planned. He is declaring something far more radical: that hope rooted in God’s love will never leave you exposed, humiliated, or abandoned.

Notice what makes this hope unshakeable—it is not based on circumstances or outcomes. It rests on the fact that “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” The love of God has been poured out, lavished, distributed generously into your heart. This is not sentiment; this is the evidence of the Spirit’s presence within you. When your business fails, when doors close, when the economy staggers and salaries delay, the Holy Ghost still dwells in you. His love remains undiminished.

The Psalmist understood this truth: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance” (Psalm 42:5). Notice the progression—the Psalmist acknowledges the depression, then redirects his hope toward God rather than circumstances. This is not denial; it is reorientation.

Think of hope as an anchor. Hebrews 6:19 tells us: “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.” An anchor does not lift the ship above the waves; it holds it steady when the waves crash. Your hope in God does not erase disappointment, but it prevents you from drifting into despair. It tethers your soul to Christ when everything else pitches and tosses.

The promise “hope maketh not ashamed” means this: you will not ultimately be put to shame for believing God. Not in this life, and certainly not in eternity. Your faith will prove justified. God’s character guarantees it.

Today, whatever rejection or disappointment you carry, let it press you deeper into the love of God already present in your heart. Do not make your circumstances the measure of hope; make the indwelling Spirit your measure. Your hope is secure not because the outcome is guaranteed, but because you are loved by the God who holds all outcomes in His hands.

Lord, anchor my soul in Your love when circumstances tempt me to despair.
