“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
— Romans 5:5 (KJV)
You sit in the Lagos traffic, watching the clock tick. Your job interview was three weeks ago, and still no word. Bills are piling up. Your family depends on you. Around you, voices whisper that your hopes are foolish—that maybe God has forgotten. Perhaps you should have taken that questionable business opportunity your cousin offered. The uncertainty gnaws at your faith.
This is where Romans 5:5 speaks directly into your crisis. Paul does not say hope feels good or arrives on schedule. He says hope “maketh not ashamed.” This is not mere sentiment; it is an unshakeable guarantee rooted in God’s unchanging character.
When we hope in God, we are not hoping in luck, connections, or chance. We are anchoring ourselves to the One who cannot lie and will not abandon His own. The apostle grounds this certainty in two immovable truths: first, “the love of God”—not a distant, theoretical love, but the very love that sent Christ to die for us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8). Second, this love is “shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.” The Holy Spirit makes God’s love not a doctrine we memorize but a reality we feel and know.
Consider what happened to Joseph. Sold into slavery by his own brothers, falsely accused and imprisoned in Egypt, he had every reason to despair. Yet Genesis 39:2 tells us, “The Lord was with Joseph.” He held fast to hope in God’s faithfulness, and years later, he could say to his brothers, “Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20). His hope did not disappoint.
Or recall Hannah, whose barrenness tormented her in a culture where childlessness was shame. Yet 1 Samuel 1:27 records her testimony: “For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him.” Her hope endured through years of waiting and became a testimony to her entire nation.
The waiting season you are in is not punishment; it is a proving ground for your faith. God is not slow; He is purposeful. He is not uncaring; He is working behind scenes you cannot yet see. When your hope is fixed on His promises, not on the clock or the circumstantial evidence around you, shame cannot touch you. Even if your prayer is answered differently than you imagined, you will not be ashamed—because His way is always better.
Today, when doubt whispers that your hope is folly, remember: the God who shed His love abroad in your heart by His Spirit cannot fail you. He will not leave you stranded. Your waiting has meaning; your faith has weight.
Lord, help me anchor my hope in Your unfailing love, not in fleeting circumstances.
