“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16 (KJV)
Chioma sat at her desk in the Lagos office, watching her colleagues spread gossip about a coworker who had made a mistake. The pressure to join in was real—a small laugh, a whispered comment, and she would fit right in. But something within her hesitated. She thought of her faith, of who she claimed to follow, and of how her silence or participation would define her witness that day.
This is the reality many of us face. Our workplaces are mission fields. Our neighbourhoods are filled with people watching us, often more carefully than we realise. Jesus did not call us to hide our faith in church buildings alone; He called us to be witnesses everywhere. In Matthew 5:16, He tells us that our good works should be visible, purposeful, and ultimately pointing others to God the Father.
The word “light” in this verse carries profound meaning. Light exposes, illuminates, and guides. When you refuse to participate in office dishonesty, when you serve faithfully even when your boss isn’t watching, when you speak truth gently but firmly—you are shining. This is not arrogance or self-righteousness; it is obedience. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:15-16 that we should “shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life.” Your consistency is your credibility.
But notice the purpose: “that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father.” This is not about drawing attention to yourself. A true witness deflects the gaze from herself and points it toward God. When your integrity amazes a colleague, when your kindness in the midst of office politics surprises someone, when your refusal to cut corners stands out—they should conclude, “There is something different about this person because of her God.”
In 1 Peter 2:12, we read: “Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.” Your witness may seem small and unnoticed, but God sees it. And sometimes, that good work is the very seed that opens a heart to the gospel.
This Sunday, as you prepare for another week, commit to being intentional about your witness. Will you be honest in your dealings? Will you speak with grace? Will you serve with excellence? Will you refuse to compromise, even when it costs you favour or promotion? These decisions are not private—they are testimony.
The question is not whether you are witnessing at work or in your community. You are always witnessing. The only question is: what are you bearing witness to? Let your light shine.
Lord, give me courage to live consistently with my faith, so others see Your character in my conduct.
