“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
You are sitting in a minibus heading to the market when your neighbour mentions she is visiting a shrine for healing. Your heart quickens. Everyone on the bus is listening. You know the Gospel could transform her life, but fear rises: What if she rejects me? What if the others mock me? What if I say the wrong thing? So you stay silent.
This moment is where many Nigerian believers falter. We possess the truth that sets captives free, yet fear locks our lips. Paul writes to Timothy from his prison cell, knowing full well the cost of boldness. He reminds his young protégé—and us—that God has not given us a spirit of fear. The Greek word for fear here is deilia, meaning cowardice or timidity. It does not come from God. Fear is a tool the enemy uses to silence the Gospel.
Instead, Paul affirms three gifts God has given us: power, love, and a sound mind. The power is not our own; it is the dunamis of the Holy Ghost working through our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When Apostle Peter and John stood before the Sanhedrin, they had no formal education, no position, no natural eloquence—yet they spoke with such boldness that the council marveled (Acts 4:13). Why? Because they had been with Jesus, and the Spirit of God filled their mouths.
Love is the second gift. Bold evangelism flows not from aggression or judgment, but from genuine love for the lost. When we truly love our neighbour, we cannot remain silent about their eternal destiny. Jesus commanded us to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This is not a suggestion for the specially gifted; it is a command rooted in love for souls.
Third, God gives us a sound mind—sophronismos in Greek, meaning self-discipline, wisdom, and clear thinking. We need not be reckless or careless in our witness. The Holy Spirit guides us in the right words at the right time. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Our boldness must be coupled with gentleness and respect.
Today, God invites you to step into the boldness He has already given you. That neighbour, that colleague, that family member—they need to hear that Jesus Christ is alive, that He saves, that He heals, that He restores. Your timidity will not spare their souls; only the Gospel will.
Where is God calling you to speak boldly this week? Pray about one conversation and trust the Holy Ghost to give you the words. Start small if you must, but start. Your fear is not from God.
Lord, fill me with Your power, love, and sound mind; silence my fear and loose my tongue for Christ.
