Speak His Name Without Fear Today

You are standing at the market in Lagos, and your neighbour—someone you have known for years—asks you directly: “What do you believe about Jesus?” Your heart quickens. Around you, people mill about. You worry they will mock you. You fear losing respect. So you smile politely and change the subject. That night, conviction settles on your heart. You missed an open door.

This is the battle many Nigerian believers face daily. We live in a land of many faiths, and boldness in speaking of Christ can feel costly. But Paul writes to Timothy—a young pastor facing his own fears—with a corrective that cuts through every excuse: “God hath not given us the spirit of fear.”

Notice what Paul does not say. He does not deny the presence of opposition or the reality of social pressure. He does not pretend witnessing is easy. Instead, he redirects Timothy’s focus to the source of his courage. Fear is not from God. It is a spirit—a force opposed to God’s nature. When you feel paralysed by what others might think, you are yielding to something God never authored in your life.

In its place, Paul names three divine gifts: power, love, and a sound mind. The power is not your own eloquence or cleverness. It is the Holy Ghost’s authority working through your testimony (Acts 1:8). The love is not sentimental feeling; it is the sacrificial care of Christ that compels you to speak, knowing people’s eternal destiny matters more than their temporary approval (2 Corinthians 5:14). The sound mind is clarity—the Spirit’s gift to help you know when, where, and how to speak with wisdom (Proverbs 10:19).

Jesus Himself modelled this boldness. Before the Sanhedrin, facing death, He confessed His identity without wavering (Matthew 26:63-64). Peter and John, ordinary fishermen, “spake the word of God with boldness” before the same council that had executed their Master (Acts 4:31). They had tasted fear, but they had also tasted resurrection power, and resurrection power is stronger.

Your calling in 2026 Nigeria is not to be reckless or disrespectful. Boldness paired with love means speaking truth graciously, answering questions humbly, and respecting those who disagree. But boldness means you do not stay silent to preserve comfort.

Today, identify one relationship where you have been silent about Christ—a colleague, a family member, a friend. Ask the Holy Ghost for power to speak, love to care for their soul, and a sound mind to do so wisely. Start small. Perhaps it is simply sharing your testimony when asked. Perhaps it is inviting someone to church. The door God has not given you is fear. He has given you everything else you need.

Lord, grant me the courage today to speak of Jesus without shame, knowing His power works through my weakness.
