“He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.”
— Proverbs 10:9 (KJV)
A petty trader in Lagos fills her scales with extra weight when customers are not watching. The rice, the beans, the garri—all measured dishonestly when her eyes alone see the deed. She tells herself no one will know. But the Word asks us a harder question: who is watching?
Integrity is not the choice we make when the market inspector arrives or when our pastor walks past our shop. Integrity is the line we hold when we are utterly alone—when we could cheat without consequence, lie without witness, steal without discovery. This is what Proverbs 10:9 demands of us: “He that walketh uprightly walketh surely.”
The Hebrew word for “uprightly” speaks of straightness, of walking a direct path without deviation. When we live with integrity in secret, we walk surely—with stability and soundness of soul. We do not stumble because our conscience is clear before God. But those who “perverteth his ways shall be known”—not necessarily by men, but by the twisting within their own spirit, and eventually by the God who sees all.
Jesus taught us this truth when He said in Matthew 6:6, “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut to thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” What happens in secret—whether prayer or dishonesty—is not hidden from Heaven. God sees the merchant who cheats when no witness is present. He sees the office worker who steals company time. He sees the student who copies in the examination hall believing the invigilator is distracted.
The Psalmist understood this when he cried out, “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts” (Psalm 51:6). God does not merely want our outward obedience; He demands the integrity of our inner man. A life of integrity—even in the market, even in the office, even at home—is built on the unshakable foundation that God sees everything.
But there is encouragement here. When we choose integrity in secret, we are not building reputation; we are building character. We are aligning our hearts with the heart of Christ, who lived in perfect uprightness at every moment. And God promises to reward this faithfulness. “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24).
Today, you will face a moment where dishonesty seems easy and undetected. A small lie at work. A false measurement. An unkind word said only to friends. In that moment, remember: integrity when no one is watching is integrity that transforms your soul and pleases God.
Challenge yourself this week to identify one area where you compromise when unseen, and choose uprightness instead.
Lord, grant me courage to walk straight before You, even in the darkness where only You see.
