“Through wisdom is an house builded: and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”
— Proverbs 24:3-4 (KJV)
A young mother in Lagos sits at her kitchen table after another difficult day. Her children have been disobedient, her husband frustrated, and she feels the weight of keeping the home together. She opens her Bible wondering: Is there a way to build a home that truly honours God? How do I lay a foundation that will not crumble?
The wise man Solomon answers her through Scripture. Through wisdom an house is builded—not through wealth, not through elaborate plans, but through the fear of God and the seeking of His counsel. A godly home begins when parents commit to making Christ the cornerstone, when every decision—from how children are disciplined to how husband and wife speak to one another—flows from reverence for God’s Word.
Notice that wisdom comes first. This is not the wisdom of the world, which says indulge your children, pursue comfort above character, or retreat from conflict. Biblical wisdom recognises that children are a heritage of the Lord (Psalm 127:3), and they require patient instruction rooted in Scripture. When you discipline in love, when you model prayer and obedience, when you speak truth seasoned with grace, you are building with wisdom.
Next comes understanding—the ability to discern what your family truly needs. Perhaps your son needs firm boundaries, not endless freedom. Perhaps your daughter needs affirmation of her worth in Christ, not comparison with others. Understanding means seeing your family as God sees them: as eternal souls entrusted to your care. Ephesians 6:4 instructs fathers to bring up children “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” This requires understanding their hearts, not merely managing their behaviour.
Finally, Solomon speaks of chambers filled with precious riches. In a home built on God’s foundation, these treasures are not bank notes or fine furnishings. They are answered prayers, forgiven offences, laughter shared over Scripture, children who grow to know Jesus, and a marriage that reflects Christ’s covenant love. These riches outlast every earthly possession.
For many Nigerian believers, the pressure is immense. Extended family expectations, financial strain, and the pull of worldly values constantly threaten to redirect the home’s foundation. Yet Scripture is clear: no external circumstance can destroy a house built on the rock of God’s Word. When parents prioritise prayer, when they model godliness, when they discipline with love and teach Scripture faithfully, the home becomes a fortress against the world’s chaos.
Your home will not be perfect—no home is until we reach heaven. But it can be purposeful. It can be a place where God is honoured, where His Word is lived out daily, and where family members grow in faith together.
Lord, give me wisdom to build my home on Your foundation, and help me choose Your ways over the world’s every single day.
