“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
— John 14:26
You wake before dawn, your mind already crowded with burdens. The shop’s rent is due in three days. Your teenager has begun keeping strange company. Your employer spoke harshly to you yesterday, and the words still sting. You wonder if God truly sees your struggle, or if you are alone in this battle.
But you are not alone. Christ promised you a Helper—one who would not leave you orphaned, but would dwell within you forever. This Helper is the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, whose name in the original language means “one called alongside.” When the Father sent the Holy Spirit in Jesus’s name, He sent you a permanent companion who knows every detail of your burden before you speak it.
Notice what the Holy Ghost does: He teaches you all things. In your confusion about your teenager’s choices, the Spirit can illuminate Scripture that speaks directly to your parenting. When you face pressure to compromise your integrity at work, He brings to your remembrance the words of Christ about faithfulness. The Spirit does not shout or overwhelm; He gently reminds you of truth already deposited in your heart. As Paul wrote, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God” (1 Corinthians 2:12). The Helper opens your understanding.
Yet many Nigerian believers live as though the Spirit’s help is distant or reserved for moments of crisis. We forget that He is meant for Monday morning—for the ordinary decisions, the daily frictions, the small temptations that shape our week. When you face the choice to gossip during the market run, the Spirit restrains you. When you are tempted to cut corners in your business to make a quick profit, He convicts you. When you feel bitter toward someone who has wronged you, He whispers the forgiveness of Christ.
The Spirit also brings remembrance. He does not create new Scripture; He resurrects what you have learned. Perhaps in a sermon months ago, you heard something that seemed irrelevant then. But today, facing your exact struggle, the Spirit recalls those words to your mind with perfect timing. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). That promise suddenly blazes with application.
This week, will you consciously invite the Helper into your decisions? Before speaking in anger, before making that business deal, before responding to gossip—pause and ask the Spirit for wisdom. He is ready. He is present. He will not fail you.
Lord, make me sensitive to the gentle voice of Your Holy Spirit today.
