The King Above All Kings

You wake this Sunday morning troubled by the news of another political crisis in your nation. The elections are approaching, tensions simmer between rival factions, and you wonder if God has lost control. Your heart whispers the ancient fear: “What if the wrong person wins? What if justice is abandoned?” This anxiety grips countless Nigerian believers in times of political uncertainty.

But Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived, leaves us with a truth that should silence every fearful whisper: “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” Notice the precision of this declaration. The king’s *heart*—the very seat of decision, intention, and will—rests in God’s hand. Not the politician’s brilliance, not the money spent on campaigns, not the manipulation of crowds. God holds the king’s heart as a river that flows exactly where its banks direct it. The king may believe he chooses freely, but the river follows its course.

This does not mean earthly leaders bear no responsibility for their choices. Rather, it means God’s sovereignty works *through* human responsibility, not against it. When King Cyrus of Persia issued the decree to rebuild Jerusalem’s temple, he exercised his royal will—yet Isaiah 44:28 reveals that God had called him by name long before, directing his heart to fulfill divine purpose. The king chose freely; God’s purpose stood firm.

Daniel faced this truth in Babylon’s courts. He declared to Nebuchadnezzar: “The most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will” (Daniel 4:17). When that proud king was humbled and his reason departed, then restored, he learned an unforgettable lesson: heaven’s throne supersedes all earthly thrones.

In Nigeria today, as in every nation, God is not panicking over election results or political machinations. He who sits in the heavens and laughs at the nations’ schemes (Psalm 2:4) has not abandoned His throne. This does not excuse us from voting faithfully, praying for wisdom, or holding leaders accountable to justice. Rather, it frees us from the tyranny of fear.

Your responsibility is not to engineer political outcomes through anxiety. Your calling is to pray with confidence, vote with integrity, and trust the One whose hand guides the king’s heart.

This week, when political news tempts you toward despair, pause and pray specifically for your nation’s leaders—that God would turn their hearts toward justice, mercy, and the fear of the Lord. Write down one political concern, then write beside it: “God’s hand is here.” Let that become your refrain.

Lord, grant me faith to trust Your sovereignty over nations when earthly powers trouble my soul.
