The King Above All Kings

You wake to news of political upheaval in your nation. The headlines shift daily—new policies, unexpected changes in leadership, economic uncertainty. Your neighbour frets about what tomorrow holds. Your coworker despairs that no one is truly in control. But this morning, before the noise of the world floods in, God whispers a truth that steadies your soul: He is sovereign over nations.

Daniel spoke these words in exile, far from his homeland, watching kingdoms rise and fall. Yet he did not panic. He did not question God’s authority. Instead, he declared with absolute certainty that the Most High God—not Nebuchadnezzar, not any human ruler—changes times and seasons, removes kings and establishes kings. This is not fatalism; this is faith. This is the foundation upon which a believer’s hope must rest.

When we read that God “removeth kings, and setteth up kings,” we must understand what this means for our lives. Every leader who holds office does so by divine permission. Whether we voted for them or not, whether we agree with their policies or not, they remain under God’s jurisdiction. Consider the words of Romans 13:1: “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” This does not mean every leader is righteous—history and Scripture both prove otherwise. It means that even flawed leaders serve God’s purposes within the boundaries He has set.

But there is more. God does not merely permit leaders to exist; He actively works through them. He gives “wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.” This tells us that God reserves the right to grant insight and discernment to those who seek Him. When you pray for your nation, you are not wasting your breath on a situation beyond God’s reach. Prayer changes nothing because God has already lost control; prayer changes everything because God has invited us to participate in His sovereign work.

Nigeria faces genuine challenges—corruption, insecurity, economic strain. These are real. But they are not beyond God’s notice or power. When anxiety about your nation’s future threatens to overwhelm you, remember that your King is infinitely greater than any earthly throne. The prophet Isaiah declared, “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers” (Isaiah 40:22). Not grasshoppers in insignificance, but in perspective—small enough that God sees all of us at once, cares for all of us completely.

Today, resist the temptation to find your security in any human government. Do not despair when leaders disappoint you. Instead, anchor your hope in the eternal throne of God. Pray for your leaders with the confidence that God hears. Work for justice and righteousness as God calls you. Trust that whatever unfolds in the political realm, God’s purposes cannot be thwarted.

Lord, help me trust that Your throne stands higher than any earthly government, and give me wisdom to pray and act faithfully in my nation.
