“The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.”
— Proverbs 21:1 (KJV)
You woke this morning to news of another political upheaval in your nation. Leaders changed positions overnight. Promises made during campaigns were forgotten. Your heart sank as you wondered: Who truly governs Nigeria? Is God aware of what is happening in Aso Rock and state assemblies? Does He care about the decisions that affect your job, your children’s schools, your safety on the roads?
These questions plague many Nigerian Christians. But Scripture settles the matter with absolute clarity. The king’s heart—whether he sits in the National Assembly or governs a state—is in the hand of the Lord. Not in the hand of voters. Not in the hand of money or political machinery. In the Lord’s hand.
The imagery is stunning. A river flows where the terrain guides it, not where the water wishes to go. Similarly, God directs the hearts of rulers as easily as He channels water. The most powerful politician, the most tyrannical administrator, the shrewdest businessman elevated to office—all are subject to God’s sovereign direction. This is not poetic exaggeration; it is bedrock theological truth.
Daniel understood this when he interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. He declared: “Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his” (Daniel 2:20). Even pagan Babylon’s king was under God’s governance. When Cyrus of Persia needed to release the Jews, God simply “stirred up the spirit of Cyrus” (Ezra 1:1) to accomplish His purposes. God’s sovereignty does not depend on a leader’s faith or character.
This does not mean Nigeria’s governance is perfect. Corruption, incompetence, and wickedness are real. But they are never outside God’s awareness or His ultimate control. He permits seasons of discipline. He allows nations to taste the bitter fruit of their choices. Yet even judgment serves His purposes. “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). God uses every national circumstance to call His people to repentance and prayer.
Your responsibility is clear. First, pray for those in authority, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (1 Timothy 2:2). Your intercession is not wasted breath; it aligns your heart with God’s reign. Second, live with integrity in whatever sphere God has placed you. Be salt and light in your community, your workplace, your family. Third, trust that God’s kingdom will ultimately triumph, regardless of temporary earthly turmoil. “The kingdom of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ” (Revelation 11:15).
Today, when anxiety about national affairs tempts you, remember: the God who holds your eternal soul also holds every nation’s destiny in His hands.
Lord, calm my fears about my nation’s future by deepening my trust in Your sovereign reign over all rulers and kingdoms.
