“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.”
— Daniel 2:21 (KJV)
You woke this morning to news of political tension in your nation. Another election cycle approaches, uncertainty fills the air, and your neighbours debate fiercely about which leader can bring change. Your heart grows anxious. Will things improve? Who truly holds the future? As a Nigerian believer, you have watched governments rise and fall, policies shift like desert winds, and promises made and broken. Yet there is a truth that must anchor your soul today: your nation’s destiny does not rest in the hands of men alone.
Daniel 2:21 declares that God Himself “changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings.” This is not poetry—it is political reality seen through the eyes of faith. When Nebuchadnezzar ruled Babylon with absolute power, when he thought himself invincible, God reminded him through a dream that He alone controls the rise and fall of kingdoms. The king who seemed untouchable was removed by God’s sovereign hand. No earthly ruler, no matter how powerful, sits on any throne without God’s permission.
This does not mean we are passive. Paul writes in Romans 13:1, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” God ordains governments—and He does so for His purposes, not always our immediate comfort. Sometimes He raises leaders to refine us, to test our faithfulness, to drive us deeper into prayer and dependence upon Him. Our responsibility is to pray for those in authority, to obey just laws, and to remember that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven.
Moreover, God gives “wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.” This means when you face political uncertainty, you are not left helpless. Through prayer and Scripture, God gives wisdom to His people about how to live righteously in any season. You can navigate complex times with moral clarity because you know your King’s will.
Consider Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” While nations rage and leaders scheme, God’s throne remains unmoved. His exaltation is not dependent on any election or policy.
Today, when you hear troubling news about your nation’s leadership or future, pause. Remember that the God who removed Nebuchadnezzar still rules. He knows every challenge Nigeria faces. He is not surprised, not scrambling, not worried about the next election cycle. Your peace does not come from political outcomes; it comes from knowing that Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, reigns eternally.
Challenge yourself today: instead of complaining about political uncertainty, intercede for your nation’s leaders with the confidence that God hears and answers prayer. Pray that wisdom prevails, that justice flows, that the Gospel advances—regardless of who holds earthly office.
Lord, help me trust that You reign over every nation, and give me peace that surpasses political circumstance.
