The Witness in the Shadows

You are alone in the office after hours. Your supervisor has gone home. The stack of petty cash sits on the desk, unaccounted for. No one will know if you take a little to settle a pressing debt at home. Your children need school fees. The pressure is real. But in that moment, you pause—and remember that someone is always watching.

Integrity is not the virtue we display when cameras roll and supervisors hover. True integrity lives in the spaces where we are unseen by human eyes. Proverbs 15:3 reminds us that “the eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” This is not a threat meant to terrify us, but a comfort meant to anchor us. God’s omniscience is the foundation of authentic righteousness.

In Nigeria, we navigate daily pressures that test our character: a government worker tempted by a bribe, a trader tempted to give false measure, a student tempted to cheat when the examiner steps away. The world whispers that the unseen sin is the victimless sin. But Scripture tells us differently. When we compromise in darkness, we compromise before the One who matters most—and we compromise ourselves.

The apostle Paul wrote, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Colossians 3:23). This shifts our entire perspective. We are not merely working for salary, approval, or survival. We work as unto God. When we understand that our smallest action in our most private moment is seen and weighed by the Almighty, our choices change. The bribe becomes unthinkable. The false measure becomes shameful. The stolen moment becomes unbearable.

David knew this truth. He wrote, “Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off” (Psalm 139:2). There is no hidden place from God’s sight. But here is the liberating truth: if we live with integrity before Him in the darkness, we need fear no exposure in the light. Our conscience remains clean. Our character remains whole.

Jesus Himself said, “For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known” (Matthew 10:26). This is not a cause for fear if we are living rightly. Evil hides because it cannot bear exposure. Righteousness stands because it has nothing to fear.

The test of your character is not what you do when observed—it is what you do when you are absolutely certain no one is watching except God. That is where integrity is forged. That is where you become truly trustworthy, not because you fear man, but because you revere the God who sees all.

Today, face one decision where you are tempted to compromise when unseen. Choose righteousness instead. Choose as though God is watching—because He is.

Lord, give me courage to be the same person in private as I am in public, and to remember always that You see.
