“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Sister Chioma sat in the hospital waiting area, her hands trembling as she clutched the results of her blood test. The doctor’s words had shaken her—elevated glucose levels, high blood pressure, warning signs of what could become serious illness. She had spent the night in prayer, but fear still gripped her. Like many Nigerian believers, she wondered: If I trust God, should I still be afraid? If God is my healer, why am I sick? These questions plague countless hearts in our nation.
Yet Paul’s words to the Corinthians cut through the darkness with liberating truth. Our bodies are not our own possessions to neglect or to fear losing. They are the temples of the Holy Ghost—sacred vessels purchased by Christ’s blood at Calvary. This is not mere poetry; it is the foundation of how we should think about our physical health.
Notice what Paul emphasizes: we have been “bought with a price.” The infinite worth placed upon us by our Saviour’s sacrifice means our bodies deserve honour and care. To glorify God in your body means neither prideful obsession with it nor reckless disregard for it. It means treating your physical health as a spiritual matter—because it is. When you neglect sleep, ignore warning signs, or refuse medical wisdom, you are not demonstrating faith; you are despising the temple God has entrusted to you.
This is where trust must be properly understood. Trusting God does not mean refusing medical attention. Rather, it means seeking wise counsel—from doctors, from Scripture, from prayer—and then committing the outcome to His hands. The Psalmist wrote, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). God Himself designed your body with intricate purpose. To care for it is to acknowledge His craftsmanship.
Philippians 4:6-7 teaches us: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus.” Health concerns are no exception. Bring them to the Father. Seek medical wisdom. Take the prescribed medicines. Exercise faithfully. Eat well. And do all this while resting in the assurance that your ultimate healing—whether in this life or the next—belongs to the Healer.
Chioma eventually began her treatment, attended regular check-ups, and committed her health journey to prayer. Within months, her numbers improved. More importantly, her anxiety transformed into peaceful trust.
What health concern has been stealing your peace? Commit it to God today, but do not neglect the practical steps of stewardship He has made available. Lord, grant me wisdom to care for this body, courage to face what must be faced, and faith to trust You completely.
