“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
Sister Folake sat in the clinic waiting room, her hands trembling as she clutched the appointment card. The doctor had discovered something abnormal in her test results, and her mind spiralled with fear. She is not alone. Many Nigerian believers face moments when a diagnosis arrives, when pain refuses to ease, or when a loved one’s health deteriorates. In those moments, anxiety whispers that God has abandoned us, that our bodies are beyond His care. But Scripture speaks a different word.
Paul writes to the Corinthians with stunning clarity: your body is not yours. It belongs to God. This is not meant to rob you of peace—it is meant to anchor you in it. When you are sick, you are not an abandoned body spinning out of control. You are God’s purchased possession, held within His covenant care. The price He paid—the blood of Christ—declares your infinite worth and His absolute commitment to you.
Notice the dual focus: “glorify God in your body, and in your spirit.” This means that health and sickness are both spiritual matters. When we trust God during illness, we glorify Him. When we refuse to panic and instead pray, we honour Him. When we seek wisdom through medical care and prayer together, we acknowledge His lordship. The psalmist knew this truth: “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Your body, however frail or afflicted, is still wonderfully made by God’s hand.
The Apostle Peter encourages us further: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). This includes the care of your physical well-being. God is not distant from your fever, your fatigue, or your fear. He is present. Jesus Himself bore our sicknesses: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Healing—whether physical restoration now or eternal wholeness in glory—is secured through His sacrifice.
Trusting God with your health does not mean rejecting doctors or medicine. Wisdom calls us to use the knowledge God has given through medical science. But it does mean refusing to make your diagnosis your god. It means praying before you take medication. It means believing that even if healing tarries on earth, your ultimate healing is certain in Christ.
Today, if you are facing health challenges, or if you are anxious about your body, remember: you are not your own. You belong to Jesus. That is not burden—that is liberty.
Lord, help me trust my body to Your faithful hands, and grant me wisdom to steward this temple well.
