“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (KJV)
Sister Chioma sat in the hospital waiting room, trembling as the doctor’s words echoed in her mind—a diagnosis that had shaken her foundation. For weeks, she had been anxious, losing sleep, spending her income on countless medical consultations. But this morning, before coming to the hospital, she read these words: ‘Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.’ Something shifted. She realised that her anxiety had replaced her faith.
Paul writes to the Corinthians with a truth that still pierces our hearts today: your body is not a machine you own, not a vessel you control alone. It is the dwelling place of God’s Spirit. This is not metaphorical—it is the actual residence of the Holy Ghost who lives in every believer. When you accepted Christ, His Spirit came to indwell you. Your body became sacred real estate.
Notice the reason Paul gives: ‘Ye are bought with a price.’ Christ’s blood was spilled for your redemption—body and soul. Your health, therefore, is not merely a personal matter. It belongs to Him who paid for it. This changes everything. When sickness comes, when your body weakens, when fear whispers that you are alone in your suffering, remember: the One who dwells in you is greater than any illness. He will never leave nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
This does not mean we ignore wisdom or refuse medical care. Rather, it means we hold these things loosely. The Psalmist declares, ‘I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:14). Our bodies deserve respect and stewardship. We should eat well, rest sufficiently, and seek medical help when needed. But we must not worship health or fear sickness more than we trust God.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). This applies to health too. Medical reports are not the final word. Tests may show disease, but God sees redemption. Doctors may say ‘incurable,’ but our God specializes in the impossible. Your responsibility is to glorify God in your body—through obedience to wisdom, through faith that does not panic, and through a life that reflects His presence within you.
Many Nigerian believers are bound by health anxiety. They obsess over symptoms, spend fortunes on unnecessary treatments, and allow fear to dominate their days. But you have been bought with a price. The Spirit of God lives in you. Will you finally believe it?
Today, commit one area of health concern to God. Write it down. Name it before Him. Then refuse to carry it. Walk as one who knows the Lord dwells within.
Lord, help me trust You with my body as the sacred temple You have made it to be.
