“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God? and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
Sister Chioma sat in the clinic, her hands trembling as she waited for test results. The pain in her chest had returned, and fear whispered that God had abandoned her. Around her, other patients coughed and groaned. She thought of her children, her work at the market, and wondered if she would see next month. Many of us know this place—the moment when our bodies betray us, and worry threatens to steal our faith.
Paul writes to the Corinthians with words that cut through our panic: your body is God’s temple. Not a machine you own. Not a possession to despair over. But a dwelling place of the Holy Ghost—sacred, precious, and under the care of the One who made it.
This is harder to believe when you are sick. When fever burns through the night. When doctors shake their heads. When money for treatment runs short. Yet the apostle anchors us to a truth deeper than symptoms: you are bought with a price. Christ’s blood paid for your redemption—spirit and body together. Your life belongs to Him, not to your fears.
Consider what Jesus himself taught. In Matthew 6:25-26, He said, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” Our God feeds the birds. He knows every hair on your head. He is not careless about your body.
Trusting God with your health does not mean rejecting medicine or doctors. Proverbs 17:14 reminds us that “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” God gives wisdom to physicians. But it means this: you will not be consumed by fear. You will not make decisions from desperation. You will seek help, take your medication, rest as needed—and do it all while resting in the Father’s hands.
When pain comes, when diagnosis arrives, when recovery is slow, remember that your suffering is not punishment for hidden sin, nor is it proof that God has forgotten you. First Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all our cares upon Him, for He careth for us. He cares for your body. He cares for your tomorrow.
This Friday, make a decision: surrender your health anxiety to the One who owns your body. Seek medical help wisely. Take your treatment. But release the grip of fear. Your body is God’s temple, and He will not abandon His own house.
Lord, help me trust You with my health as completely as I trust You with my salvation.
