Your Light Must Shine Where You Stand

Your supervisor just passed you over for promotion again. The contract went to someone less qualified, someone everyone knows cuts corners and inflates invoices. You feel the heat rising—the injustice burns. That evening, at the market, your neighbour asks why you seem troubled. You could complain loudly about the unfairness. Instead, you mention how you trust God’s timing, and you ask how her family is doing. She pauses, then says, “That’s why I respect you. You don’t gossip like everyone else here.” In that moment, your witness spoke louder than a thousand complaints.

Jesus calls us to let our light shine before men. This is not about wearing a cross necklace or announcing your Christianity at every meeting. It is about the steady, undeniable radiance of a life lived according to God’s Word—in your workplace, your market stall, your neighbourhood, your transport ride. When people see your good works, they do not glorify you; they glorify your Father in heaven.

In Nigeria, where corruption is commonplace and shortcuts are expected, a believer who refuses to compromise stands out like a lamp in darkness. When your colleagues pad their expenses and you do not, when they gossip and you remain silent, when they cheat clients and you give honest measure—people notice. They may not say anything immediately, but they notice. More importantly, God notices, and He rewards faithfulness.

Paul wrote to the Philippians, “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15). Your workplace is a crooked and perverse nation unto itself. Your community has its own darkness. But you are called to shine there—not to judge harshly, not to be self-righteous, but to live so visibly under God’s rule that others cannot help but wonder what makes you different.

Your good works are not performed for applause. You work diligently because you fear God, not because your boss watches. You speak truthfully because Christ lives in you, not because it profits you. You serve others with kindness because you have been loved by Jesus, not because you expect reward. Yet when these works are seen, they become a sermon without words.

The apostle Peter tells us, “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation” (1 Peter 2:11-12).

This week, identify one area where your light must shine brighter: your workplace honesty, your market dealings, your neighbourhood relationships. Choose one specific good work to perform visibly and faithfully, trusting God to use it as a witness.

Lord, help me shine so brightly through my faithful work that others see Jesus and not just my effort.
